You’ve survived publish-or-perish without perishing; enlightened students who paid attention to you over their notifications and likes on social media; politely tolerated department meetings; and have sadly witnessed the neoliberal corporatization of higher education that has turned the university into real estate investor, hedge fund manager, and brand logo while cosplaying as guardian of academic freedom, advocate for liberal arts learning, and purveyor of knowledge regardless of its marketability or popularity in the eyes of donors and the board of trust. All you really want now as emeritus is a comforting cup of coffee that reassures you that it was all worth it.
